Purse, probably Italian, c1550

Silk, metal thread, and metal

This silk purse probably originates from Italy, the centre of the European silk industry during the sixteenth century. It was knitted together in a knit stitch known as stockinette, and its edges were finished with a purl stitch, which as it developed around 1550 helps to date the purse. The purse is lined in silk with an interlining of linen.
