Bag, British, 1840–49

Wool and silk thread, silk chenille, cord and floss, and metal beads

This striking bag is embroidered with silk thread and wool in a Florentine stitch, also known as a flammo or Irish stitch. Today this zigzag stitch is known as a flame stitch and is usually executed in brilliant reds, yellows, oranges and pinks. Two silk chenille tassels in matching colours complement the stitch of this example.
