Vanity dance purse, French, 1920–29

Ivorine, cord and floss

The long strap on this barrel-shaped purse allowed it to be suspended from a dancer’s wrist, leaving the elongated tassel to sway with her movements. The purse opens on hinges to reveal a mirror and four lidded chambers that could contain coins or cosmetics.
