Vanity dance purse, American, 1920–29

Celluloid, cord and floss

Bold contrasting jazz-age colours render this tiny receptacle particularly striking. During the 1920s cosmetics, which had previously been applied sparingly and discreetly, became an integral part of a flapper’s modern look. This green celluloid compact was designed to hold powder and a puff. Within two of the tassels are concealed lipstick canisters, while the third holds a celluloid tube possibly for a cigarette and matches.
