Gas mask box, British, c1939

Card and string

This gas mask box probably belonged to a young boy since it is a size small and the name William B. is handwritten on its lid. Government-issued gas masks came in cardboard boxes like this one with a long string attached so that it could be carried over the shoulder. The government requested that all men, women and children retain theirs at all times.
