Handbag, British, 1880–85

Leather and metal

This handbag is similar in style and size to a pocketbook, although it has only one main compartment in which to keep all the owner’s belongings. Pocketbooks were a fashionable accessory during the late nineteenth century and had numerous compartments that could conveniently carry a large number of personal items, for example, calling cards, pencils, handkerchiefs and mirrors.
